Hey guys, this was suppose to be an email for OLR, but I guess it didn't go through. Regardless, I felt that I should share a poem I wrote in reaction to the recent news of Jennifer Hepler's departure from Bioware. I must warn you that this poem is emotional, and its purpose is to create understanding and combat online harassment. With that being said, I'll be voicing opinions that some may not agree with. Therefore, all I ask is for you to keep an open mind. I can't ask for you to enjoy it, but I hope you can appreciate what it's trying to communicate.

The Tragedy of a Female Video Game Writer

It started with a harmless comment from a simple writer,
“Let players enjoy the story without the gameplay,” she said.
In response, she faced an angry community,
Many who threatened her with rape or her to be dead.

The threats intensified as time passed,
They were even made to her family.
For the sake and safety of her personal life,
She had to leave a great company.

Although I too didn’t agree with her opinion,
I respected her point of view.
Even if I didn’t, I wouldn’t try to justify threatening her children,
And I severely pity those who do.

Many might say, “Just ignore the threats.”
But there was too many for her to bear.
And once those threats reach your family,
You too would have no choice but to care.

Anonymity has its uses,
Hell, our forefathers used it too.
But these days call for limits to be placed,
In order to protect those closest to you.

The Internet is suppose to be a tool for communication,
Not a weapon to be used against kids.
I really wish I had it my way,
I’d place the harassers in front of the men and women from the Scared Straight vids.

Jennifer Hepler will be sorely missed,
I respect her for everything she’s done.
It’s a shame that this happened to her and her family,
From the community of an industry that’s all about having fun.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Jennifer Hepler, her family, and everyone else who’ve fallen victim to such threats from the online community.

Sincerely,
Degenerate Johnny
