I was able to get in. It was nighttime, so I was going to run into the cottage it spawned me in front of, but it won't let me in. Will wait for sun to come up before going back in...

Well I mean it was actually not letting me walk into the cottage. I'd open the door, try to walk in, and it'd respawn me just outside the door. Haven't tried since your post, though, but it's different than not letting me in the server.
I'm not used to not playing on Peaceful. I ventured out and immediately heard strange groans and ran back to outside the cottage and logged off.

Yeah it's pretty scary at night. Especially the Endermen. I found an abandoned mine. They're really sweet. There's so much detail in the game. I'd attribute the glitching you experienced to my resetting the server a few times. I don't think you'll have that issue anymore.

There's some strange gong noises I hear. I think they're just random noises they added in the newer versions.

I logged on and built myself a basic house, then got lost with loki in the mines, but we found a way out... right by my house. Turns out our mines are connected but good luck if I'll ever find my way back thru that hahahah
