The Bobby Blackwolf Show

The Bobby Blackwolf Show is a weekly internet radio show and podcast discussing the latest news in gaming as well as sometimes reminiscing about gaming's history. It records LIVE on Sundays at 8PM Eastern/5PM Pacific on the VOG (Voice of Geeks) Network Twitch Channel while taking live calls via Discord and including chat room interaction. The show began in October of 2004 as an internet radio only show, taking a hiatus in December of that year. It relaunched on July 24, 2005 and has been broadcasting new content every weekend ever since. On December 18, 2018, it moved from radio to video on Twitch.

While the show focuses on recent news and events in the gaming industry, frequently it delves into the independent or barely mentioned gaming scene, as well as discussing gaming's history with classic games.

The show has covered six E3's, two GDC's and Independent Games Festivals, four Penny Arcade Expos and multiple Dragon Cons, as well as other gaming events in the southeast, like SIEGE and the Southern Fried Gaming Expo.

Some guests of the show during its long run have been: Video Games Live, Homestar Runner, Atari Flashback 2, Beggar Prince, MechCorps, The Silver Lining, PlayStation Home, Gearbox Software, Devolver Digital, Telltale Games, and the IGDA. Bobby has also interviewed voice actors AJ LoCascio (Back To The Future), Jessie Seely (Double Dragon Neon), Ellen McClain (GLaDOS), John Patrick Lowrie (Team Fortress 2 Sniper), and Jennifer Hale (Mass Effect FemShep), as well as musicians Tommy Tallarico (Everything), Ken Allen (Sierra On-Line), Jake "Virt" Kaufman (Shovel Knight and DuckTales Remastered), and GRAMMY award winner Christopher Tin.

The show does not work without YOUR live interaction, and each chatter is thanked personally at the conclusion of each episode. Come join us on Sundays at 8PM Eastern/5PM Pacific at the VOG (Voice of Geeks) Network Twitch Channel!

We begin by finally discussing the tragedy in Connecticut from last month, spurred on by the Vice President meeting with the video game industry to discuss what to do to prevent those incidents in the future. It's not as cut and dry as people want to believe. The Consumer Electronics Show was this past week, and there were a few gaming products shown, the first of which was the admission that there are Valve Steam Box prototypes. The Android platform saw some new consoles, led by Nvidia's "Project Shield" using the Tegra 4 processor. Microsoft showed off their IllumiRoom technology, combining the Kinect with a projector to turn your entire living room into the game screen. Then we take calls about Borderlands 2 and Steam gaming.

It's a new year, and we start with a eulogy to something of Bobby's that broke on New Years Eve. Other companies cried foul when THQ tried to keep their workers employed, and have blocked them from selling to Clearlake Capital Group so they could buy the intellectual property and give them to their already existing studios. Sony has patented technology to shut down the used game market - and we've already got a solution to get around it. The Senior Vice President of EA Maxis defended the always-on connectivity of the upcoming SimCity to try to justify the DRM. Unfortunately, it removes player choice. Then we take calls about Forza Horizon and how to hack the RFID chips in Sony's patent.

It's the final show of 2012, and is a little bit longer than most due to no live Orange Lounge Radio that evening. We start out talking about how THQ has filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, and is looking to sell. A major publisher is interested. The War Z, a zombie survival horror shooter, made misleading statements about game features and then blamed the customers for misreading those statements and making them misleading. Then we take calls about The Hobbit movie, Forza Horizon Rally, Quarrel, Bit Trip Runner, and Old Spice's Dikembe Mutumbo's 4 1/2 Weeks To Save The World.

We begin with a rant about the demo for the JRPG Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, and why more care needs to be made to have demos be more understandable. The Kickstarted game Code Hero has run out of money, and almost faced a class action lawsuit from its backers. In a followup from last week, the Nintendo eShop in Europe only shows PEGI 18+ content at night due to German laws. Then we take calls about demos, Assassin's Creed III, and Xenoblade Chronicles.

For the second year in a row, video games will be represented at the Grammy Awards, with Austin Wintory's soundtrack for the PS3 indie game Journey being nominated for Best Score for Visual Media. The SpikeTV Video Game Awards occurred over the weekend, and the question is - are they getting better, or are we just getting more used to them? Not only do we geek out about the GOTY winner, but also discuss The Phantom Pain and what we believe it really is. Nintendo has shut down PEGI 18+ rated material from the European eShop for most of the day - it is now only accessible between 11PM and 3AM. GLU Mobile purchased Gamespy several months ago, and recently shut down the multiplayer servers of multiple legacy games, and are demanding too much money to turn them back on. Then we take calls about The Walking Dead, Journey, and the entire Tron franchise - both about a new movie as well as the Tron: Uprising cartoon that is about to be cancelled.

We begin with a stolen segment that has nothing to do with video games - but it's only a minute and a half long so just sit through it and agree with Bobby. Nintendo has announced the Wii Mini for Canada - a stripped down Wii without backwards compatibility, internet, or SD card support. We also read comments from the site about the Wii U's storage and ask if the honeymoon period is over yet. SEGA has decided to attack it's own fans by forcing the removal of any YouTube videos about the Saturn games Shining Force III and Shining the Holy Ark, in anticipation of their upcoming PSP title Shining Ark. There is now a Humble THQ Bundle, and boy are the Linux-loving DRM-hating minority PISSED. (The rest of us are getting great games whilst benefiting wonderful charities.) Then we take calls about Canada, Max Payne 3, and the Wii Mini.

We begin this show with an actual email received to the show - which was not exactly complimentary. Fair warning - here's a little bit of meta ranting for the first 10 minutes of the show. But then we talk about the Wii U now that we've had a full week with the system. We talk about the lack of onboard storage, how the Wii emulation works, the Miiverse, and if you should get it now, or wait until later. Then we give our impressions of Scribblenauts Unlimited the game - available on BOTH the Wii U and Steam. Then we take calls about the Wii U and Scribblenauts Unlimited.

It's time for initial POSITIVE impressions of the Nintendo Wii U after only three hours of play. This is a trainwreck of a show (due to spending more time messing with the system rather than preparing a show roll) but we hit on the system, the tablet, Nintendoland, and Scribblenauts Unlimited. During the OLR call, we talk about the Xbox LIVE 10th Anniversary.

We are back to having a "normal" show, so Bobby goes back to talking about things he's interested in - like how Smartglass is REALLY laggy with Forza Horizon. Peter Molyneux is back with Curiosity: What's In The Cube? Spoiler alert: NO1CURR. Disney bought Lucasfilm last week - and it's time for us to kill your dreams over anything related to the old Lucasfilm Games properties from the 90's. Blizzard is being sued over their account authenticators. They believe it's frivolous. Then we take calls about Halo 4 and Wreck-It Ralph.

In this non-live episode, we have THREE interviews! First up, we have Nigel Lowrie, THE MAN at Devolver Digital, talking about Devolver's approach to indie game publishing as well as Hotline Miami and Serious Sam. Then, we have Derek Paxton, Lead Designer of Elemental: Fallen Enchantress by Stardock, talking about coming from the mod design world to full game design world, and why those who played Elemental: War of Magic should give this game a shot. And finally, we have Russ Bullock, President of Pirhana Games, talking about MechWarrior Online, the free-to-play game that is currently in Open Beta.
