The Bobby Blackwolf Show

The Bobby Blackwolf Show is a weekly internet radio show and podcast discussing the latest news in gaming as well as sometimes reminiscing about gaming's history. It records LIVE on Sundays at 8PM Eastern/5PM Pacific on the VOG (Voice of Geeks) Network Twitch Channel while taking live calls via Discord and including chat room interaction. The show began in October of 2004 as an internet radio only show, taking a hiatus in December of that year. It relaunched on July 24, 2005 and has been broadcasting new content every weekend ever since. On December 18, 2018, it moved from radio to video on Twitch.

While the show focuses on recent news and events in the gaming industry, frequently it delves into the independent or barely mentioned gaming scene, as well as discussing gaming's history with classic games.

The show has covered six E3's, two GDC's and Independent Games Festivals, four Penny Arcade Expos and multiple Dragon Cons, as well as other gaming events in the southeast, like SIEGE and the Southern Fried Gaming Expo.

Some guests of the show during its long run have been: Video Games Live, Homestar Runner, Atari Flashback 2, Beggar Prince, MechCorps, The Silver Lining, PlayStation Home, Gearbox Software, Devolver Digital, Telltale Games, and the IGDA. Bobby has also interviewed voice actors AJ LoCascio (Back To The Future), Jessie Seely (Double Dragon Neon), Ellen McClain (GLaDOS), John Patrick Lowrie (Team Fortress 2 Sniper), and Jennifer Hale (Mass Effect FemShep), as well as musicians Tommy Tallarico (Everything), Ken Allen (Sierra On-Line), Jake "Virt" Kaufman (Shovel Knight and DuckTales Remastered), and GRAMMY award winner Christopher Tin.

The show does not work without YOUR live interaction, and each chatter is thanked personally at the conclusion of each episode. Come join us on Sundays at 8PM Eastern/5PM Pacific at the VOG (Voice of Geeks) Network Twitch Channel!

EA was voted The Worst Company In The World, and the internet rejoiced. Then, a bunch of EA employees lost their job. Xbox Live went down over the weekend, spurring the always online debate. The Internet rejoiced again when a Microsoft employee who made some social media mistakes left his job. Our interview from PAX East is with Alex Toplansky, Creative Director at Deep Silver, to talk about the recently released beatemup Sacred Citadel. Then we take calls about Microsoft, Xbox Live, always online consoles, the Ouya, and gamers being jerks.

"Rumors" and "Sources" are causing a lot of heartache, and really, it needs to stop. The Ouya has started shipping to Kickstarter backers, and apparently it sucks...But apparently, that's okay. This week's PAX East interview is with Dave Gilbert of point-and-click adventure game publisher Wadjet Eye Games, promoting Gemini Rue's newly released iOS port. Then we take calls about DRM (with an I-told-you-so dance), Disney closing LucasArts, and Telltale abandoning King's Quest.

PAX East 2013 is in the books, and we talk about what the show IS, and what it ISN'T - it's a celebration of the CULTURE of games, not necessarily the games themselves! Some of the games mentioned: the card game Flame War, Transistor, Saints Row IV, DuckTales Remastered, and Artemis: Spaceship Bridge Simulator. The interview we have is with Nathan Fouts of Mommy's Best Games, discussing Serious Sam DD XXL, his Gamasutra blog about violent games, and his multiple appearences in FOX News articles. Then we take calls about Bioshock: Infinite, new 3DS owners, HarmoKnight, and Civilization V.

NOTE: THIS EPISODE IS MARKED EXPLICIT DUE TO ONE INCIDENT LEFT UNCENSORED IN THE FIRST 12 MINUTES. SimCity has been exposed as having many more problems, and several emailers took Bobby to task over his comments from the week before. An "insider" at Maxis contacted Rock Paper Shotgun to tell them that the servers are not necessary for the game to run, but then explains what the servers do to make the game run. Kotaku realized that they could play offline for 19 minutes before the game kicked them out. Portions of the code were leaked, and they show that the simulation isn't as nifty and complex as we were lead to believe. There is a forum thread at VOG to suggest questions for a bunch of indie interviews at PAX East this weekend...Let's meet up if you're going!

Tonight's interview (starting around 24 minutes in) was recorded at MomoCon, a young anime and gaming convention in Atlanta, and is with Jennifer Hale, the voice of the female Commander Shepard in Mass Effect, as well as a bunch of other roles. You can see VOG's pictures from MomoCon in an album on our Facebook Fan Page. But first, we talk about SimCity's launch, and ask if it's really DRM or just a design decision (regarding using the cloud for simulation processing) that fell flat on its face. We take several very heated calls about SimCity, and then one about the new Tomb Raider. During the OLR call, we talk about F-Zero AX being found in F-Zero GX using Action Replay codes.

Ken Allen was one of Sierra's many composers during the heyday of PC adventure games in the early 90's. His work includes Space Quest IV, King's Quest V, and Jones In The Fast Lane. (Which was awesome.) He's also been successfully funded via Kickstarter for his Under The Half Dome album, paying tribute to his previous work with all of today's modern technology. We caught up with him on the road (literally) to talk LIVE about his career then and his career now - from Space Quest to Vulcan Fury to Rift (believe it or not!) all the way to the currently in production SpaceVenture. Then we take calls about game music, Civilization Revolution (it was on sale), and the indie documentary It's Dangerous To Go Alone, all about the fandom surrounding the 8-bit Legend of Zelda games.

Sony announced the PlayStation 4 on Wednesday, to mixed response. You won't be able to play PS3 games natively on the PS4, and it's because of Sony using the Cell processor in the PS3. Everyone's asking the wrong question with regards to used games, which is allowing Sony to sidestep the question. Don't these companies realize that the general public doesn't understand the concept of a tech demo? Meanwhile, and F-Zero released on the Wii U Virtual Console for 30 cents on Wednesday...

Bobby's a HUGE Sierra fanboy, and teased the Kickstarter project (now funded) of game composer Ken Allen, Under the Half Dome, an album based on a lot of his early work. Including Jones in the Fast Lane. Which we all have an unhealthy obsession with. Ubisoft designer and Rayman creator Michel Ancel joined protestors outside of their Montpelier studio who were upset about the delay of Rayman Legends. The NPD's sales numbers show the Wii U had extremely low sales for a console just out on the market...Is it time to panic yet? The final casualty of 38 Studios is Impossible Studios, the remnants of Big Huge Games backed by Epic. There's been a lot of talk about how the media was lied to about Aliens: Colonial Marines...But is the media really at fault? Then we take calls about Destiny, Ni No Kuni, and Arcadecraft.

Right before we went on the air, we learned that Austin Wintory did NOT win a Grammy for his amazing soundtrack for Journey. Luckily, Journey and Walking Dead took over the DICE awards, so there's no lack of hardware... Sony will announce the next PlayStation on the 20th...Should we even bother with rumors for that or the next Xbox? One thing's not a rumor: Microsoft has killed off XNA, and will not be making updates for it to work with Windows 8 or the next Xbox. Ubisoft announces that Rayman Legends is going multiplatform, and as such, the Wii U version will be delayed until September. Is this because of a lack of faith in the Wii U platform, or because Microsoft wouldn't allow them to release on the 360 if they released on the Wii U first? Then we take calls about Walking Dead, Halo 4, Austin Wintory, and the Bobby Blackwolf Fun Forever mode in SimCity.

THQ has been broken up into smaller pieces and acquired by different companies...Well, except for Vigil Games. Nintendo announced their plans for the Wii U Virtual Console, including having introductory games cost 30 cents for 30 days. In Japan, they're getting some cool stuff, and in Europe, they're getting crappier versions. A gamer trolled the media by claiming to be a Microsoft employee, but is gaming journalism really as bad off as he claims? The midpoint break is Jonathan Coulton's Baby Got Back. You might have heard it on Glee. You might want to support charity and buy the real version that Glee stole. Then we take calls about gaming journalism, Glee vs. Jonathan Coulton, politics, and about how Bobby installed Origin to play the SimCity beta.
