The Bobby Blackwolf Show

The Bobby Blackwolf Show is a weekly internet radio show and podcast discussing the latest news in gaming as well as sometimes reminiscing about gaming's history. It records LIVE on Sundays at 8PM Eastern/5PM Pacific on the VOG (Voice of Geeks) Network Twitch Channel while taking live calls via Discord and including chat room interaction. The show began in October of 2004 as an internet radio only show, taking a hiatus in December of that year. It relaunched on July 24, 2005 and has been broadcasting new content every weekend ever since. On December 18, 2018, it moved from radio to video on Twitch.

While the show focuses on recent news and events in the gaming industry, frequently it delves into the independent or barely mentioned gaming scene, as well as discussing gaming's history with classic games.

The show has covered six E3's, two GDC's and Independent Games Festivals, four Penny Arcade Expos and multiple Dragon Cons, as well as other gaming events in the southeast, like SIEGE and the Southern Fried Gaming Expo.

Some guests of the show during its long run have been: Video Games Live, Homestar Runner, Atari Flashback 2, Beggar Prince, MechCorps, The Silver Lining, PlayStation Home, Gearbox Software, Devolver Digital, Telltale Games, and the IGDA. Bobby has also interviewed voice actors AJ LoCascio (Back To The Future), Jessie Seely (Double Dragon Neon), Ellen McClain (GLaDOS), John Patrick Lowrie (Team Fortress 2 Sniper), and Jennifer Hale (Mass Effect FemShep), as well as musicians Tommy Tallarico (Everything), Ken Allen (Sierra On-Line), Jake "Virt" Kaufman (Shovel Knight and DuckTales Remastered), and GRAMMY award winner Christopher Tin.

The show does not work without YOUR live interaction, and each chatter is thanked personally at the conclusion of each episode. Come join us on Sundays at 8PM Eastern/5PM Pacific at the VOG (Voice of Geeks) Network Twitch Channel!

Glu has announced that they are shutting down GameSpy's multiplayer servers at the end of May, which affects many older multiplayer games. Some focus group somewhere told Amazon that another Android gaming console was a splendid idea, so we have the Amazon Fire TV. An "eBay for Gamers" has been reported to ripping off indie publishers by buying charity bundles for the lowest price and then selling the Steam keys for massive profit. Then we take calls about the good old days of online multiplayer.

The Game Developers Conference just ended, and this was recorded the Sunday night immediately following - which means it includes NOTHING about what happened the following Tuesday. Sony announced Project Morpheus, a Virtual Reality headset exclusive to the PlayStation 4 utilizing technology from PlayStation Move. Oculus announced, and began taking preorders, for their second Developer Kit, featuring many improvements over the original. Epic announced that Unreal Engine 4 would become extremely affordable to any game developer, from the AAA studios to even the enthusiast who is curious. Unity 5 was also announced that bring a lot of features to bring AAA-style quality to indie projects. Then we take calls about how these engines are now taking a very indie-friendly route.

The Game Developers Conference is this week, and I spend time reminding that the intended audience is Game DEVELOPERS, and not Game CONSUMERS. Some stories of GDC's past where consumers got upset, or citizen journalists ruined it for everyone. Microsoft has stated that the Games With Gold program will become more in line with consumers expectations, with veiled references to PlayStation Plus. Then we take calls about safe spaces for game developers and what GDC should and shouldn't be.

Three Oculus Rift projects were announced or reached milestones - the first ever "late night talk show" ever done in VR called Riftmax Live, Classroom Aquatic squeaked by its Kickstarter goal, and the creator of VRJam winner Ciess announced his Oculus Rift Launch Title Darknet. Jack Tretton steps down as the head of Sony Computer Entertainment America, and we look back at what he will be known for outside of the company. One US retailer has the PlayStation 4 camera in stock, and they jacked the price above the suggested one. Then, we have a chat session (nobody called in) about if people should expect reimbursement if prices drop on products several months after they are launched, and how much room Titanfall will take up on your PC hard drive.

We are now ALL Pokemon masters, even if we wanted anarchy. There was some great discussion on the Oculus Rift subreddit about my editorial. King has abandoned the trademark for "Candy" in the US, but this is no time to celebrate. Nintendo is shutting down the online multiplayer services for Wii and DS games in May. (Not said in the podcast: this is due to Gamespy's new owner Glu Mobile wanting to charge too much money to keep the servers operational, and Nintendo doesn't see the benefit of paying higher rates.) Then we take calls about Clubhouse Games on the DS, and local multiplayer going away.

Have you tried my Flappy Bird clone Flappy VOG? It's my first "published" game that I coded. It's pretty simplistic. Someone remade The Legend of Zelda for the Oculus Rift, and I learned that I was a VR Hipster when I didn't like it. Irrational Games laid off 100 people who won awards for Bioshock Infinite, but all the Internet can talk about is how excited they are for what Ken Levine's next project is. But is it really his fault? Then we take calls about Steam Machines and Gabe Newell's Cult of Personality.

The Evil K has crushed another indie developer, this time taking down CandySwipe, a game remarkably like Candy Crush Saga except for the fact it was released and trademarked two years earlier. The Titanfall Beta was out, and was declared great for people who sucked at FPS's...What does someone who ACTUALLY sucks at FPS's think? An activist investor is trying to convince Microsoft to dump all of it's consumer divisions, such as Xbox, Bing, and Surface. The music break is a song I wrote in 1999 called Resurrection, made in Impulse Tracker by Jeffrey Lim - He's going to release the source code this year, the 20th anniversary of IT starting development. Then we take calls about Titanfall and Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes. During the OLR call, we talk about Flappy Bird clones flooding the market, and then announced our own clone called Flappy VOG - where you can play as podcasters who never shut up. Play it NOW absolutely free on VOGNetwork.com!

The most popular mobile game of the month, Flappy Bird, is no longer available on the app store because the developer had a mental breakdown due to the success. Ubisoft's game about hacking got hacked, when someone spoofed a request to have one of the trademarks for Watch Dogs abandoned. Then we take calls about Flappy Bird, and an indie developer taking a quote from a reviewer's Twitter account out of context.

This is all about online games before you even realized there was an online. We talk with Josh Renaud, proprietor of Break Into Chat, to talk about Bulletin Board Systems and their asynchronous multiplayer games that were the precursor to today's social games. We talk about how online worked back in the day, define some terms that might be thrown about, and talk about the general culture of the BBS scene. After the interview, there is a little bit of personal information regarding the latest weather event to hit Atlanta, and what the REAL story should be, rather than the one that's making headlines.
