The Bobby Blackwolf Show

371 - 02/10/13 Bobby Blackwolf Show - Next-Gen Console Rumors, Ubisoft Abandons Wii U

  • Right before we went on the air, we learned that Austin Wintory did NOT win a Grammy for his amazing soundtrack for Journey. Luckily, Journey and Walking Dead took over the DICE awards, so there's no lack of hardware...
  • Sony will announce the next PlayStation on the 20th...Should we even bother with rumors for that or the next Xbox?
  • One thing's not a rumor: Microsoft has killed off XNA, and will not be making updates for it to work with Windows 8 or the next Xbox.
  • Ubisoft announces that Rayman Legends is going multiplatform, and as such, the Wii U version will be delayed until September. Is this because of a lack of faith in the Wii U platform, or because Microsoft wouldn't allow them to release on the 360 if they released on the Wii U first?
  • Then we take calls about Walking Dead, Halo 4, Austin Wintory, and the Bobby Blackwolf Fun Forever mode in SimCity.

Hate to say it, but as more and more data comes out, I think the poor sales performance of the Wii U is a legit concern. And the dearth of new games is only going to make it worse. It could have a resurgence during the holidays, but that is a long time from now, and there will likely be far more competition than there is now.

The Rayman Legends story is anger inducing, because Ubisoft is really screwing Nintendo over with this, not releasing the title when it should've been out (I wonder if the initial delay had something to do with this though). But at the same time it makes me happy, since I don't have a Wii U and I think I won't get one soon and hopefully this means we'll also see it for PC (even if it's not confirmed yet).

BTW, if any of you haven't checked out Rayman Origins, it's seriously one of the best platformer games released in recent years. And it's dirt cheap (on all platforms, including PC).

Also, lots of sadness with Austin Wintory not winning the Grammy, though I'll let my call do the talking there.

Man, we haven't been this sad or angry in a while in a Blackwolf show, have we?

Trent Reznor did in fact recently do the music for Call of Duty Black Ops 2, which also had a Hollywood screenwriter. Oh to have Activision's video game budget...

On the briefly discussed topic of the D.I.C.E. awards, I think Walking Dead won the appropriate awards, as did Journey. Walking Dead won mostly story and acting awards, but Journey got a lot of the design, innovation, and artistic awards as it should be.

I loved both games so no real complaints from me, though after playing The Unfinished Swan it was great to see them recognized with some artistic and design nominations as well. That really is another amazing download game. Would have been cool if they could have snagged one of those awards from Journey, though I understand that Journey kinda dwarfed every download title this year.
