The Bobby Blackwolf Show

363 - 11/25/12 Bobby Blackwolf Show - More Wii U, Scribblenauts Unlimited Impressions

  • We begin this show with an actual email received to the show - which was not exactly complimentary. Fair warning - here's a little bit of meta ranting for the first 10 minutes of the show.
  • But then we talk about the Wii U now that we've had a full week with the system. We talk about the lack of onboard storage, how the Wii emulation works, the Miiverse, and if you should get it now, or wait until later.
  • Then we give our impressions of Scribblenauts Unlimited the game - available on BOTH the Wii U and Steam.
  • Then we take calls about the Wii U and Scribblenauts Unlimited.

Really loved the show, Bobby. My last two cents about the SSD inside the Wii U, I do still think it should be a little bigger like Act Deft was saying. To go from 32GB to 64GB would cost a little more, but I'd wager Nintendo gets a great price on storage and could afford to eat it without raising the console price. Reggie did say they make a profit off of every Wii U sold with at least one game, so maybe they would just need to sell two games to make a profit.
The ability to add external storage is awesome for those who can afford it, but those of us who want to wait on a purchase like that and instead use that money for more download games right away, 32GB is just small. I have 75GB on my old fatty PS3 with about 11GB free which is just enough for me because I like to download movie rentals, TV shows and even transfer my own files to it, in addition to the great download only video game titles I own.
I think that guy was way off base attacking you for not piling on the Wii U last week. There was plenty of that to be found everywhere else, and I think you're review was very comprehensive and the amount of time you took to really delve into the console was evident in your quality review this week. On the behalf of Jims everywhere, I'd like to say we aren't all like that guy.

I think it's mildly ironic that you chide the Wii U haters for ripping on it (and its proponents) without actually trying it out for any period of time, but you seem to do the same with Apple products...;)

All kidding aside, as much as I talked crap about the Wii U when it was first announced, and really don't have much good to say about it, it really just comes down to me not being a huge fan of Nintendo game franchises. I was more of a PC gamer during the NES/SNES heyday, so I missed a lot of the games that served as the foundation for the Nintendo fandom.

I came back into console gaming with the PS2-dominated era, and largely to play RPGs like FF-X, Xenosaga, etc. Point is, as always, it comes down to the games, and nothing that I personally want to play is exclusive to the Wii U.

So my ultimate position is: glad you're enjoying it, hope they work out the kinks, but it's still a pass for me...

I actually own lots of Apple products, just none of them are an iPhone. I have two iPod Touches, an iPad 2, and a Mac Mini. All but the iPad 2 have been obsoleted, though, and the iPad 2 will probably be obsoleted next year whenever iOS 7 comes out. (I've also, until my Mac Mini was obsoleted, been an official iOS developer working on apps, including one for VOG.)

And my ultimate position is: a console is only as good as the games you want to play on it. You're not a fan of those games, so you'd be silly to pick one up. Nothing wrong with that!

Ah, but do you own an iPhone 5? Past experience with a company's products isn't supposed to be a basis for judgment, IIRC...;)

(Just messing with ya!)

I do like some Wii-exclusive games, but got so damn tired of dealing with the controls...I just resigned myself to not playing them. So the information about the Dolphin emulator was awesome...I'll be playing around with it over the weekend!

I've been interested in Dolphin emulator as well since there were a couple of Wii games I never got my hands on after selling our console (The Last Story, Xenoblade, Mario Galaxy 2) but I need a new computer first.

Great response to the email. I don't know what this Jim guy was expecting since when have you ever trashed a console on day one? You didn't do that to the PS3 and that was a truly horrendous launch. I have a WiiU and I still appreciated your thoughts as they had to do with things you can only know from actually using it and I still haven't tried everything yet. Thanks for not being another part of the snarky echo chamber. I like being able to get different opinions from different places and I've known you long enough to really value yours, so I'm not going anywhere.

I agree with criticalmyth that the WiiU is not for everyone. I'm having a lot of fun with mine but it's still a launch console that lacks a full library and may never get one as far as third parties go.

Scribblenauts Unlimited is amazing. I'm having so much fun playing around in it, seeing how creatively I can solve the puzzles.
