The Bobby Blackwolf Show

585 - 09/10/17 Bobby Blackwolf Show - Dragon Con 2017 Wrapup, Journalists Bad At Games

  • I'm back from Dragon Con and I'm inspired and looking forward to the year ahead.
  • We have a followup from a previous call about if Nintendo has any competition this holiday season, and a commenter says that Sony is a worthy challenger.
  • At Dragon Con, I sat in on a panel by Al Lowe, creator of Leisure Suit Larry, and he talked about his time at Sierra On-Line before the company was stolen from Ken Williams.
  • I discuss that I might want to do more Twitch streaming and be more of a positive influence, but that leads into how Dean Takahashi, someone who has been covering the video game industry for 25 years and is respected by many (including myself), was drug through the mud for uploading a humorous video of him not doing too well at a difficult indie game.
  • Then we take calls about video game soundtracks and reviews.

On reviews.

My opinion on reviews is that instead of looking at the meta score and/or try to get a general consensus on what's good; I'd look at the individual reviewer and see their past reviews as a guildline to see if their personality/view on games fits yours and try to relate that to the current game your deciding on purchasing. (unless you're one who just look at the meta score and don't buy anything that has an average below the 90 percentile)

For example, if you're looking for what's popular and mainstream you probably want to look towards IGN

If you're looking for the "perfect" game and never satisfied i'd go with Jim Sterling

If you're looking for the best bang for you buck, maybe go with Angry Joe

If you're looking for game critiques I'd go with ACG

If you're a fanboy of a particular console i'd go with a reviewer that has the name of the preferred console/company. For example if you're a Sony fanboy, go follow a publication that has the word 'Playstation' as part of their name

Want to know what's mainstream, has amazing graphics and has movie style qualities to it? Go with Forbes or Washington Post

Want to purchase a game based on controversy, Polygon

Reviewer that has roots on nostalgia and retro games? Maybe go with happyconsolegamer

etc. etc.

Whatever the case maybe, best to follow several reviewers instead of just one especially if they cater to just one genre or a fanboy of a particular series (unless you're into that too).
