The Bobby Blackwolf Show

479 - 05/03/15 Bobby Blackwolf Show - Valve And Bethesda Back Down, ESPN2 Airs eSports

  • The Vintage Computer Festival Southeast 3.0 was this weekend (crept up on me) so I talk a little bit about it and an interesting Commodore 64 device to assist with actually using a C64.
  • Valve and Bethesda have backed down on their attempt to allow mod makers to charge for Skyrim mods.
  • ESPN2 aired Heroes of the Dorm, Blizzard's college MOBA championship, and everyone went crazy.
  • Then we take calls about eSports, Guacamelee, and Disney Infinity 2.0.

I have nothing else to say, so have some VOG type related questions - feel free to reply with "We don't comment on rumours and speculation". Plus, I've been dying to ask such questions:

1) Will there be a VOG app on iOS/Android/Windows Phone, so we can check-in, or listen live on the go. Maybe even an Xbox One/PS4 app?

2) Will VOG, in the future integrate with Twitter or Facebook, so when we unlock a piece of loot, we can bug our friends and followers? Thus it gives the site more visibility on the Internet.

3) Will there ever be an edit button for the comments? (I know your reply to this, but it's fun bugging you about it anyway).

4) Achievements and Trophies, people care about those, any plans to implement them on the website? For example, reaching a number of loot unlocked, or check-ins.

5) Winner of the month's leaderboard - any plans to put an icon after their name on the board, like a title belt? Then that icon goes away if they don't win the next month.

I've typed these questions so you have time to think about them, or consult with the VOG squad, if need be.

I look forward to your responses.

1. Dedicated apps are not in the immediate pipeline, because we're trying to drive people to the site to help us maybe get back in the good graces of some of the industries we cover. What IS in the pipeline is a more responsive website so it looks and works so much better on a mobile device.

2. There already is site code that integrates with Twitter (all those "We are now live!" tweets from @VOGNetwork are automatically generated from the site, as was a bunch of stuff when we covered E3) so doing the Twitter nagging is something we can consider!

3. Own your own misspellings.

4. The Loot system is intended to be our Achievement/Trophy system, but now we're at the point where we can award some more overall Loot, much like the "days visited" loot. We actually wanted to have some Loot that drops if you check into many episodes both live and passphrased, etc...

5. Awesome idea!

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated - you are a cool motherfffftrucker.

I've visited the site on my mobile device (iPhone 6) and I have to zoom in on every page because it's not native to it, so that's great a site is in the works for mobile devices. Crossing my fingers that you guys do get into the graces of the companies you cover. I liked the huge E3 map - never did find that hidden loot though!

Okay, okay, okay, I promise I'll proof read every comment I make.

Isn't it cool? You could have a virtual champion every month, assuming you do a VOG title belt.

Time to proof read this now, before pressing Post.

In 2013, there was a very interesting company name and booth number combination.

In 2014, the first thing that came through our mind was what Brad Pitt was screaming in SE7EN.

I did watch a lot of Heroes of the Dorm with my wife on Sunday night (sorry OLR!) and we both really enjoyed it.
With the twitter reaction, I thought it was going to do a lot better than a 0.1 rating, which didn't even crack the top 100 cable programs for the day, but like you said on the show, it was a deal with Blizzard and counter-programming with all the other sporting events going on that night. I hope it gets a chance again.
By the way, when the spelling bee finals are on, it actually takes over all three ESPN channels throughout the day.
