The Bobby Blackwolf Show

401 - 09/29/13 Bobby Blackwolf Show - 2013 Games for Health Jam

  • This week is a non-live show due to previous commitments, but that doesn't mean we don't have interesting content for you. Bobby visited the first ever Games for Health Jam, put on by the Georgia Game Developers Association and the Centers for Disease Control at Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, GA.
  • We first interview Ben Sawyer, who co-founded the Games for Health project in 2004, about what he hopes to achieve having video games advocate healthy living, what he feels the current crop of students can achieve, and some hopes for the future.
  • Then, we interview Dan Baden and Leigh Willis from the Centers for Disease Control about what a "Game for Health" really is, and what they hope to see from the next 48 hours. (We also check in with them at the end of the 48 hours to get a post-mortem right after they picked the finalists who will be judged at SIEGE this coming weekend where Bobby is also a speaker.)
  • We also talk to a couple teams willing to stop coding long enough to talk about their game idea, any setbacks, advice for future game jams, and how pissed off they were that they were there instead of playing Grand Theft Auto V.
  • A couple of non Games for Health Jam notes - big thanks to everyone for their support of my Oculus Rift editorial I Am Stereoblind, But The Oculus Rift Is My Corrective Lens. It went viral much more than I ever imagined it would. I also appeared on Episode 14 of the Rev VR Podcast talking all about the Oculus Rift.

It's nice to see organizations and small branches of government embracing games as tools for education and awareness. If this kind of thing is successful and is proven to work, I'd love to see it in schools and public events.

In my opinion, this kind of thing is much more effective than a stray pamphlet or 20-minute lecture.

Until now, I always thought the CDC was a fictional place in The Walking Dead. If there's ever a zombie apocalypse, I'm hauling arse to Atlanta Georgia.

Keep a light on for me, Bobby and Coca-Cola Vanilla on ice.

Those are some great pictures by the way.

Well, watch out - because the CDC building used in The Walking Dead is actually a concert hall right near where this game jam was happening, so don't go there to hide. But now I can say I've seen Weird Al perform at the CDC...

How about coming to your place to hide, or maybe the Coca-Cola factory or museum? At least we will never get dehydrated, but with all that caffeine in that stuff, we may never sleep.

Speak to you this Sunday. Yes, I will be calling in to your show, and will be on my best behaviour.

I love what Ben Sawyer said about how technology has improved and come down in price thanks to the popularity and innovation of video games. It's too bad the news tries to blame games for so much that's wrong when they actually help more than they could ever hurt.
